UK Wedding Venues

Planning your wedding can be a frantically busy time. But once you have a date and wedding venue firmed up, stress levels start to drop, and everything else falls into place.

Whether you are going for a wedding on a grand scale, or planning something rather more intimate, in your home town or at the other end of the country, UK wedding venues offer plenty to stimulate the imagination.

Marriages must take place in venues where they can be legally solemnised. That covers a huge range of places, from churches registered for marriage to any premises which have been granted a civil wedding licence.

Since April 1995, couples have not had to hold civil ceremonies in Register Offices, and there are now thousands of places licensed for weddings across the UK. From stately homes and castles to zoos and football grounds, the choice is seemingly endless.

Venues which won’t receive a licence include private homes, marquees, and movable structures like boats and trains. Equally, those held outdoors do not meet current wedding laws. But, of course, you can hold the after-party wherever you like!

And things are a little more relaxed north of the border - in Scotland you can exchange vows by the shores of Loch Ness or on the top of Ben Nevis if you want to!

With no restrictions of parish boundaries for civil ceremonies, you are completely free to hold your big day outside the area where you live. So choose from Norman keeps, country houses, grand hotels, rustic barns, award-winning gardens or traditional inns. Or perhaps you would prefer a dash of city centre chic?

With the UK enjoying so much in the way of breathtaking and varied landscapes, stunning historic buildings, spectacular coastline and an array of wonderful villages, towns and cities, there are any number of amazing backdrops for your big day.

Wherever you go for, the first decision is whether to hold the ceremony and reception in the same place, and, if not, how you and your guests will travel between the two venues.

Have a good idea of numbers before you start visiting venues, and decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a standing reception, as this will also affect capacity. Finally, think about the entertainment you want, and check that this can be done in the space available.
