Honeymoon Destinations

When it comes to honeymoon destinations, the world really can be your oyster, with almost unlimited choice for newlyweds.

Start by asking yourself what kind of honeymoon you really want. Rest and relaxation or culture and adventure? For some couples a week of lolling on a Caribbean beach would be heaven, others get restless after a day or two.

Maybe sightseeing and shopping in a wonderfully romantic city like Paris or Rome would be ideal? Or perhaps you fancy mastering a new skill, such as cooking in Tuscany?

For the more actively inclined, consider ballooning and kayaking or hiking, anywhere from the Himalayas to New Zealand. A honeymoon to Thailand, India, the US or Latin America could be a real journey of discovery and exploration. Getting married in the winter? Consider a romantic ski break with log fires, spectacular scenery and a cosy chalet for two.

Hawaii offers dramatic coastlines, volcanoes and forestland, and spectacular resorts. Mexico is vast enough to cater for all tastes, offering train rides through canyons, ancient ruins and white sand beaches. Jamaica, St Lucia, Antigua and the Bahamas all offer a taste of tropical paradise for newlyweds, while the Dominican Republic and Cuba are beautiful, affordable island bases for your honeymoon.

Closer to home, Italy is a top pick for honeymooners staying within Europe. The land of Amore has everything, from the northern Alps and lakes to the Tuscan countryside, dazzling cities and the Amalfi Coast: everything, in short, that you’d want for a classy and romantic escape.

Probably more than with any other kind of holiday, a honeymoon has to be the right kind of trip of both of you – or at the least one of you has to agree to compromise! For example a trip to Greece or France could take city explorations and some downtime on a lovely beach. Perhaps you could each write your wishlist of top five destinations and then compare notes?

Have a realistic budget and stick to it. No-one could blame you for wanting at least a touch of elegance on your first hols as a married couple. But if a whole honeymoon in a five-star hotel or resort is prohibitively expensive, stay in the lap of luxury for a few days, then somewhere less pricy.

Alternatively, your wedding guests could give you travel vouchers to put towards your honeymoon.
